Had a great weekend of fishing out in bath and highland county. Skip and I stopped at ramseys draft on the way out to williamsville. together we caught 5 natives on top flys, they were in the 5 to 7" range. We were only there about an hour and we fished right at the parking area where there is more presure, so if we had hiked up, perhaps we would have taken more and bigger fish. We spend saturday and sunday morning on the bull pasture. I caught 5, always on nymphs. I did catch one 2" rainbow on a top fly. It was in an area they do not stock, so I guess in was born in the river. One fat 13" bow in a non stocked area on a hares ear that is very difficult to get too. he gave me one of the best fights I ever had jumping multiple times. The weather was great. The water was a little low for the area, and very clear. Gary
John et al, any inside info on the progress of the corsey springs renovation. Are they still planning on reworking spring run as a better habitat? Is it on schedule etc. Gary
The shad will be in the Rapp soon enough. As a newbe to shad fishing I need some input on line. I have an 8w pole which I plan to use. I am trying to decide on the type of line to use. I have found two in orvis that I am considering. 1. an intermediate line with a 1 to 1.5" per sec. sink rate 2. a sink line with a 5.5 to 6.5" sink rate (for $49.00 i might add) any opinions on which may be the better line for me on the rapp. Garyr
Nathan, keep checking the site. one of our upcoming meetings will be on shad fishing and I believe the club will be having an outing for them. Join us for the meeting if you are able.

Hey folks, my wife gave me a great book on shad fishing. Many of you have more than likely read it, The Founding Fish by John McPhee. It gives a great history of shad in the US as well as plenty of great stories about his fishing adventures. It is full of natural history as well as the impact of the fish on the development of the country. I thought I would recommend it to you all and get us thinking about spring. Gary
Folks, are we missing something buying all this expensive equipment? check out the press release I found.

the trip was great, but not much luck with the fly fishing. I went in the area of the Canada hole. I guess I need some lessons on salt water fishing. Some moderate luck with standard surf casting. but as they say, a bad day of fishing...... Garyr
I just had this mounted :)
Hey folks, I am going down to Hatteras next week. I will be bringing my 9w rod. Can anyone tell me what is in the water this time of year and where to fish for them. Any feedback on flys and how to fish them would be nice too. I know summer is not the best time, but does anything start to come back in august? Any nice spots you know of down near hatteras? Garyr
So folks, how was the club outing saturday. Give us some fishing reports and embarrassing stories. Garyr
Hey, did everyone see the article in this months FFF magazine about the debate about fly fishing competitions? Our club tournament is featured as an example. there are two pictures from the event, one featuring Gary Burwell netting. I have virtually the same picture at home as my son was photograping at the same time. Does anyone want to chime in on the pros and cons of fly fishing tournaments? does it help or hurt the sport? I loved the article. Garyr
where is the 3 weight fly rod? garyr
kingfisher, I fished there a few years ago earlier in the season, and the water was much higher. I caught several over 9". I dont think it gets too much presure. I backpacked up there too. The stream stays pretty strong several miles up with no other real access. I do hear it gets prettly low in the summer. One could hike a few miles before making the first cast. garyr
Has anyone been up to the native trout streams since the big rains the other night? I was wondering how the water looks in case I want to wander up there this weekend.

Take a look at sunday's Fredericksburg paper. A nice article about shad egg harvesting and release of fry back to the rappahannock up as far as the hazel river.
Went out on a family outing to a friends cabin in the goshen area near the maury river. The section which is designated as trout water is at a picnic area, with plenty of acess. the problem is on a holiday weekend, LOTS of people are splashing around in the water! When I first got there, it was too chilly for most. As I fished, more and more folks ventured into the water. So I would move up stream, and the splashers followed. I did catch one 12" rainbow and a few bites on an olive wolly bugger. I gave up after I realized there were more acess points up stream with people in them. Maybe it is a better place to fish in april when the water is too cold for the humans. I also checked out the acess to Guys run, which flows into the maury. It is designated as a native stream. It looks like it may be a hike to the water. Saw some wading stud foot prints on the trail, so someone when up there this weekend. Anyone ever fish Guys run? would love to know if it is worth the hike. garyr
